Llanfechain, Powys is the latest area to receive Airband’s high-speed wireless broadband service. Following the successful rollout in Guilsfield, Crew Green and Llandrino, residents of the village of Llanfechain can now now also benefit from the service. DEFRA second round funding opens

Defra has opened up the second round of funding via the Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF). The fund provides access to £20 million for community driven projects that can bring Next Generation Broadband (NGA) to the hard to reach 10% of counties across the UK. Following the successful roll-out of Airband high-speed Internet to customers in Guilsfield and Crew Green, Arrdleen has now also been added to the list of available areas.

Residents from Guilsfield and Crew Green have been delighted with their improved broadband commenting that “down load speeds are unbelievable”, “installation is painless”, “customers support is first class” and “the monthly cost is surprisingly low for such a high quality service”.

If your speeds are less than 2 mbps, funding for installation is still available from the Welsh Government , but is quickly running out so test your speed now, and apply today.

Hope for some of the worst affected areas

On-line news portal MyWelshpool reports the results of a recent survey by uswitch.com showing that areas of Powys have some of the slowest speeds of towns in the UK. Fortunately, thanks to the Welsh Government Broadband Support Scheme Airband are able to offer affordable services to residents of central parts of Guilsfield and Crew Green and a number of the surrounding properties. Broadband adds value to homes

A survey by ispreview indicated that buyers would pay more for a house with high-speed broadband with 80% of respondents not being prepared to buy a house with speeds of less than 10 Mbps. The report concludes;

“At present most of the available evidence remains anecdotal but the indications still seem clear. Given a selection of houses, people are more likely to pick the one with super-fast connectivity than risk being left digital isolated by a slow service.”

Grant funding update

Business Minister Edwina Hart has announced she is extending the time scales for the Broadband Support Scheme in Wales which was due to finish in March. However, no additional funding has been identified at this stage. 83% of the £2M fund has already been allocated with a significant number of further applications currently in the pipeline. So, anyone wanting to benefit from the scheme should get their applications in soon. Run your speed test here.
